Sparrows

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.”
Matthew 10:29 (NIV)

Due to time restraints, I didn’t get the opportunity to answer the question posed in a recent church event. The question: What is your favourite bird and why? The immediate answer – a sparrow.

Why would this be, considering all the great variety of birds, many of which are much more exotic than the humble sparrow? In part that is the answer. The humble, common sparrow is found the world over, unlike so many other more colourful birds. It’s the most widely distributed bird on the planet. To me they have a certain cheeky charm. It’s also a sociable little bird that will even eat out of your hand in the right conditions. Hence, plenty of good reasons to choose the sparrow as a favourite bird.

However, there is something else about them which you’re most likely aware of. Yes, the humble sparrow is even mentioned by Jesus himself as cited in the header scripture above. It’s interesting that the first part of the verse refers to the selling of sparrows for food which was a common practice in different cultures. Next, even more interesting and significant, it tells us, reassures us, that we are loved and cared for by Almighty God.

This can and should be a source of encouragement for all believers on a daily basis and especially when we are feeling vulnerable, unloved, or uncared for. The next time you see the common humble sparrow chirping away, allow time to reflect and remember “…even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid [downcast, feeling unloved or uncared for]; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:30-31).

Rest assured that God cares for his creation, He knows when a sparrow falls, numbers the hairs on your head, and cares about even the small details in our lives. Consider then the beautiful, common sparrow. Take some time to watch and observe them, and allow the humble sparrow to remind you, whether in good times or bad, of God’s love for his creation, and for you, a believer and beloved child.

Prayer
Blessed be the Lord God Almighty. Thank you for your marvellous creation, the common sparrow and so much more. We ask to be encouraged especially when we are downcast. Help us to remember that you love, care, and watch over us whatever the circumstances of our lives. In the name of Jesus, Amen
